How temporary deprivation can make us appreciate the little things
As I sat in the state of bliss with my cup of coffee, I started to wonder: am I more thankful for things in a state of deprivation? I can't remember the last time my coffee tasted this good. Could I bottle this feeling? Are self-restraint and self-denial key to gleaning more joy from things?
The term hedonistic adaptation gets tossed around in psychological circles, especially when the topic of happiness comes up. It is the phenomenon where we, as humans, will over time acclimate to a fun, novel, exciting thing or event—whether it is as small as buying a coveted object or as large as winning the lottery. Over time, we get used to the once excitement-inducing item and eventually we return to a baseline.
I understand that I may be simplifying things and that finding contentment in life isn't always so easy. At times, depriving ourselves will lead to contentment, but there are times that a life of self-denial would end up being a bummer.Removal of excesses in life that no longer serve a meaningful role in our lives.The viewing of these things with gratitude and appreciation.
