The Oscar-nominated Get Out star says he was enticed by the role while having a casual dinner with writer Lena Waithe
Kaluuya plays Slim—a warm, quietly confident man on a first date that goes awry when the couple is pulled over by a trigger-happy cop. After a violent tussle, Slim wrests the gun away and shoots. It’s fatal. Now he and Queen are on the run and slowly falling in love, aided by Lena Waithe’s script and Melina Matsoukas’s stylish direction.
The Oscar-nominatedstar first heard Waithe’s pitch for the script over a casual dinner and was fascinated by Slim, “an everyman” who has “been pushed in this situation where it's made him question himself.” He also fell for the black love story that Waithe and Matsoukas staunchly protected from studio tweaks. “It feels uninterrupted,” he said. “That’s what’s really exciting about it.”
