A few national observers thought it might be overkill when word got out two days after Christmas. Yet, even though Young bet heavily on deGrom at five years, $185 million, he wasn’t all in. He was well aware of deGrom’s track record since 2019, when he won the second of his back-to-back Cy Youngs. He needed the kind of insurance his new ace couldn’t give him as his innings count dwindled.
Even if deGrom never actually earns his $185 million guaranteed, take heart in the fact that at least it’s not your money. The beauty of a sport without a salary cap is you can eat your mistakes. Because Young has work to do. He was wise enough to know he needed to build out his rotation even after signing the best pitcher on the planet. No reason to think he won’t try to do the same without an ace up his long sleeve.
But the depth Young built has been depleted, and he needs to shore it up. He can do so without shopping the top of the market. Probably can’t say the same at closer.
