The birthday concert was born of two of Eric Nadel’s great passions: Friends and live music. A year later, he folded in a third passion – mental health...

“I don’t know if ironic is the right word that I’m dealing with this right now and hosting the show,” he told the. “But hopefully speaking out about it will help some others get help. I’ve had an outpouring of support. But I’ve also heard from people who were reluctant to reach out about their own health. Seeing me be public about this has helped them seek help. That’s the good that can come out of this for me.

In January, unable to attend a dinner honoring him for his volunteer work, Nadel released a brief statement about his condition. In March, when it became clear he’d not be ready to be in the booth for the start of his 45th season with the Rangers, he released another. He has spent the last four months going talk therapy, trying alternative therapies and various medications. He is making progress. This he knows because it’s not the first time he’s dealt with a mental health issue.

That is part of why Nadel is speaking now. The other part: The benefit, of course. The concert has long been sold out, but Nadel’s focus lately has been the auction. He’s a little concerned. Because Ponder is such a rising star and because radio station KXT promoted it, the audience may look a little different than in the past when it was mostly “Friends of Eric.”

The auction is the short-term focus. Then he will get back to working on his eventual return. He’s been watching or listening to games nightly, kept his day-by-day book in preparation for a return, and getting more and more excited about a winning baseball team for the first time since 2016. The Rangers have given him significant support and plenty of leeway on time toward recovery.
