SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — As the Rangers hit the mid-point of their desert sojourn Wednesday morning, manager Bruce Bochy suggested that Jacob deGrom had “turned a...
On Wednesday morning, DeGrom faced hitters for the first time this spring. He threw 35 pitches over two “innings,” to a group that included catchers Jonah Heim and Sandy León and newly arrived outfielder Yoshi Tsutsugo. The fastball sat at 98 mph with pretty precise command, but a handful hit 99. His final pitch of the first was an overpowering 100 mph heater to Tsutsugo. Poor guy waited 10 days to get his visa situation settled in Japan, gets on the field and, well, hello, buddy.
It was just the start of a good day for the Rangers where the starting rotation was concerned. Lest anybody forgot if we haven’t mentioned it in the last 24 hours, that’s what this entire spring is about. About deGrom: He was happy with just about everything … except the slider. It was a little inconsistent, he said. He felt like his arm stroke was a little long. He’s still working on some mechanical tweaks. But, if everything goes well, he will very likely work on it next in some type of game environment. DeGrom, himself, said he felt like that was the next step.
“It’s a long season,” deGrom said. “The main thing is to be healthy. If you have to start on a [more] limited pitch count, after two starts, it’s pretty much lifted.”
