Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said the returning starter looked like ‘a guy that missed a lot of time’ Tuesday night.
taking the loss in the Rangers’ 14-1 stumble vs. the Astros. He gave up four earned runs on five hits and a walk in one-and-a-third innings pitched, threw 35 pitches, struggled with command and watched his velocity dip yet again.
That, though, is a problem for Wednesday. Back to Tuesday. Eovaldi’s brief start had little to do with his performance. Eovaldi was set to function more as an opener than a starter; the Rangers had Dunning warming up in the bullpen before Altuve’s first home run had even cleared the left field fence. He hadn’t pitched in nearly two months, hadn’t thrown to live hitters since mid-August and returned from the injured list without making a rehab start in the minor league.
Altuve’s first home run came on a 94.9 mph, middle-middle Eovaldi fastball. His second came on a middle-middle slider. Eovaldi fell behind 3-0 in each of the at bats. It dropped even further on Tuesday; his fastball was 1.3 mph slower than average and maxed out at 95.1 mph. His splitter was -0.4 mph slower.
