A natural phenomenon in Yosemite National Park draws thousands of visitors each February. See the rare 'Firefall' in photos.

Thousands flock to Yosemite in February for a natural phenomenon at the park’s Horsetail Fall. To see it, you’ll need a reservation and a bit of luck. For just a few weeks in February, if conditions are right, a waterfall in Yosemite National Park in California glows bright orange at sunset for a few minutes, an annual phenomenon that draws crowds of visitors each year hoping to catch the moment.

When there is enough water in the park from melting snow or rain, Horsetail Fall cascades down the east side of Yosemite National Park’s giant granite rock known as El Capitan. The sight at Horsetail Fall, known as the “firefall,” only occurs from about five to 15 minutes before sunset in mid- to late-February.The orange light of the sunset streaks between the valley’s walls and casts its light onto the rock face, giving the water a fiery glow.

To manage the crowds that flock to the valley for the event, the National Park Service has instituted a reservation system for the weekends when the firefall is expected to happen.Visitors had a snowball fight while waiting for sunset on a recent Thursday.
