A rare portrait by Pablo Picasso of his lover and muse, Marie-Thérèse Walter, painted during one of the most prolific years of the artist’s career, will make its auction debut next month, where the painting is expected to sell in excess of $60 million.... [+]Picasso painted “Femme nue couchée” in 1932, widely considered to be one of the best years of his career as he focused intently on paintings for his first retrospective, which was held in Paris that year .

This portrait of Marie-Thérèse is a biomorphic twist on the classic subject of a nude woman reclining, and Picasso painted his muse with gray, languid limbs reminiscent of a sea creature along with sensual curving shapes, a highly styled woman’s face in profile and a pair of appendages that evoke imagery of both eyes and breasts.

The allusions to the sea tie in to Picasso’s relationship with Marie-Thérèse, according to Sotheby’s: The couple had an affair under the nose of Picasso’s wife and son during a family trip to the beach in 1928, and Marie-Thérèse was an accomplished swimmer. The seller acquired “Femme nue couchée” directly from Picasso’s descendants in 2006 after it was held in the artist’s estate for decades, Sotheby’s said.Picasso painted dozens of images of Marie-Thérèse throughout his career, and her portraits are some of his most valuable work.
