“To the organization, I just want to say thank you for believing in me. I was drafted there at the age of 21, I’m 27 now and it’s been a helluva long journey, but I wouldn’t trade it for nothing in this world,” Higgins said in the video.
“Cleveland, what’s happening?” Higgins said at the end of the nine-minute long video documenting his signing with the Panthers. “Sorry our journey had to end. It’s been a damn long, good ride, the good, the bad, the ugly.”
The last of four receivers drafted by the team in 2016, he managed to stick around the longest and has been the most successful of the receivers the Browns picked that year. Only Higgins, a fifth-round pick, and first-round pick Corey Coleman remain in the NFL. In 2019, he appeared to fall out of favor with the coaching staff and was targeted just 11 times, catching four, his lone touchdown the game-winner against the Buffalo Bills in Week 10.
In the divisional round loss to Kansas City, he caught five of seven targets for 88 yards, but was also involved in one of the game’s most controversial plays, fumbling the ball out of the endzone before crossing the plane of the goal line late in the second quarter following what appeared to be a helmet-to-helmet hit by safety Daniel Sorensen.
