If you follow technology or gaming news then you've probably heard the term ray tracing a lot recently. It's the hottest new buzzword in the consumer hardware world, but what is it and why is it such a big deal?
Share to twitterThe Nvidia GEFORCE RTX 2060 graphics card is displayed during a press event for CES 2019 , PlayStation Architect, Mark Cerny, revealed some interesting details about Sony's next-generation console. Cerny listed off a number of rather impressive features like 8K resolution and a solid state drive . However, arguably the most surprising feature he mentioned was the inclusion of real-time ray tracing support.
To put it simply, ray tracing is an advanced lighting technique that's capable of creating incredibly lifelike images. It's able to do this by imitating the physical behaviors of real light. What this means is that simulated light in a 3D virtual scene will interact with objects and surfaces in the same way it would in the real world, producing much more realistic-looking computer-generated shadows, reflections, and refractions.
Ray tracing is used extensively for computer-generated imagery in movies and TV, so this technology isn't necessarily new. However, doing it in real-time and incorporating it into consumer hardware is.
