Projects include emergency sirens, fuel breaks and undergrounding utilities.

A sign welcomes motorists to Paradise, Calif., on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023. Officials in Paradise, California, began testing a new wildfire siren system this summer as the five-year anniversary of the deadly and devastating Camp Fire approaches. Reliable warning systems are becoming more critical during wildfires, especially as power lines and cell towers fail, knocking out communications critical to keeping people informed.

Twenty-one sirens atop steel towers, disguised as Douglas fir trees, emit one minute of loud “Hi-Lo” warning sounds followed by evacuation instructions. The system can be controlled manually, over the internet or by satellite. Power is hard-wired underground, but each siren also has a solar panel. Many have cameras. One of the major corridors, Pentz Road, is getting a $73 million widening, with a new two-way left turn lane and bike path, which can double as an evacuation route.

Five years after the Camp Fire destroyed much of the town, work to underground power lines continues in Paradise, Calif., Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023.
