A record number of the women on this year's SelfMadeWomen list are billionaires
Meg Whitman, the former eBay and Hewlett Packard Enterprise CEO who's heading video startup Quibi. In industries spanning biotech and aerospace to makeup and entertainment, 25 female billionaires shattered the glass ceiling to land onnew list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women. That’s up from 24 last year, and sets a new record. These trailblazers, who were born as far away as Burma and India, are worth a combined $56 billion.
Another woman who rose from humble beginnings, Oprah Winfrey was born to a single teenage mother who worked as a housemaid. The Mississippi native endured sexual abuse as a child and was once sent to a juvenile detention home, but later earned a scholarship to Tennessee State University and then dropped out to start a career as a local TV reporter. She hit it big with her daytime talk show in the late 1980s.
Eight of the self-made female billionaires were born outside of the U.S., including South Korean native Thai Lee, who breaks into the top five for the first time with a $3 billion net worth. Lee bought a software reseller with her now ex-husband for less than $1 million in 1989 and turned it into SHI, a $10 billion IT provider.
