Red McCombs, who died at 95, brought Spurs to San Antonio and was also an owner of Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Vikings and a University of Texas booster.SAN ANTONIO — Members of the Spurs family remembered San Antonio billionaire and franchise patriarch B.J. “Red” McCombs as an iconic Texan whose devotion to the franchise ranked second only to his love for his family.
Gervin fondly remembers how McCombs stood by him during his “down times,” a dark period in the four-time NBA scoring champion’s life stemming from addiction to drugs and alcohol. McCombs had his own struggles with alcohol during his younger years. McCombs took on about one-third of the operating expenses while Drossos lined up additional investors.
Besides Popovich, now the NBA’s all-time winningest coach and a five-time league champion, Brown’s staff included R.C. Buford, who was promoted to Spurs Sports & Entertainment’s CEO in 2019 after twice earning NBA Executive of the Year honors as the team’s general manager. McCombs also frequented the locker room after games at both HemisFair Arena, where the Spurs played from 1973 until they moved to the Alamodome in 1993.
