The first leg I’ll add to that is Sale allowing more than 2.5 earned runs. I’m very concerned that his velocity is down and he’s facing off against a Houston lineup that crushes left-handed pitching. The Astros’ numbers have been obscene lately against southpaws and Sale is still ramping up after an extended stay on the IL, which to me is a formula for a bumpy outing. The third and final leg features Houston second basemanto record a hit.
While normally I’d give Boston the starting pitching advantage, I’m not so sure that’s the case on Wednesday. Sale won’t be on a full workload, and is experiencing diminished velocity in yet another attempted return to the rotation. The bullpen advantage goes to Houston over Boston , albeit the gap is not terribly wide.
I’d be hard-pressed not to play Houston if looking or a moneyline side in this contest due to the impressive numbers we’ve seen from them against left-handers. Posting a 173 wRC+ in as large of a sample size as 267 at-bats does not have much precedent. As for the total, I fancy the Over. Boston has trended to the Over for much of the year when playing AL opponents, going 47-35-1 O/U. The Red Sox have also trended in that direction in away games, going 25-15 O/U.
