A request for qualifications can help to narrowly focus on developers whose skills and focus align with how the community wants to see the area be redeveloped; however, leaving it more open-ended helps to ensure that this redevelopment opportunity remains available for a wide range of developers that specialize in a number of industry sectors, Quint said.
A slide from a presentation that Michael Quint, City of McKinney development services executive director, gave to the McKinney City Council on May 23. It shows where the four city-owned properties that will be redeveloped are located in the historic downtown.“My concern is that we end up with stuff we don’t want and we have to do this over again because I do think that we can come up with some additional priorities that are valuable,” said council member Justin Beller.
“Everybody wants to see the character, the charm, the walkability and the quaint nature of downtown McKinney preserved, if not expanded, but at a minimum, it’s got to be preserved,” Quint said.
Several council members, including Patrick Cloutier and Charlie Philips along with Mayor Fuller, voiced that they are not interested in bringing a multifamily residence to downtown. But Cloutier noted that condos could be a residential option worth exploring.
