Friday is International Transgender Day of Visibility, which is intended to celebrate the contributions of transgender and gender-expansive people at home and around the world. This year, the celebratory aspects of Transgender Day of Visibility are being overshadowed by threats to TGE visibility in the form of hundreds of bills attacking TGE adolescents, their families and their providers.
I am a clinical psychologist with a focus on TGE mental health, and almost everyone I work with is a TGE person living in Illinois. Even though our state continues to offer gender-affirming care to TGE youth, much more needs to be done to truly protect and celebrate the lives of TGE people and to make it safe for us to be visible.More than 400 bills targeting TGE people have been moved forward this legislative session, and the vast majority of them most directly affect TGE teens.
State legislatures are also criminalizing parents who want to access recommended medical treatment for their teens. And medical providers are being legally compelled to withhold recommended medical treatment, which is against their ethics and against established medical guidance that has been robustly supported by numerous clinical studies over decades.
