and other nonprofits in our area, dozens of refugee families from Afghanistan, Ukraine and other countries are making new lives for themselves in Central Pennsylvania.

Phuong, a Vietnamese refugee, has been a leader in helping settle the recent influx of Ukrainian and Afghan families in central Pennsylvania. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, 151 Ukrainians have settled in Dauphin, New Cumberland, York, and Lancaster, according to Phuong. “The work has been quite challenging, but thanks to a small team of dedicated Afghans staff and volunteers, we were able to resettle all 35 Afghanistan families totaling 126 men, women, and children, including two newborn babies,” said Phuong.

Duma Mohmane, case manager/program specialist said, “housing is a nightmare” all agencies are facing. “To save them from being killed by the enemy,” said Phuong. “We evacuated them from their capital city of Kabul on August 15, 2021.” In just six weeks, Phuong said his agency welcomed 126 refugees.Federal funding helped cover the first six months of rent for the Afghan refugees while the men looked for work.
