James, who will turn 39 in December, has peace of mind about his family and a renewed determination to work, but he also has improved health and “a lot more in the tank to give.”
Lakers star LeBron James talks to the media during the team’s preseason media day on Monday at the UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo. After contemplating his own basketball mortality in a way that’s rarely seen publicly after the Lakers were swept in last season’s Western Conference finals, James needed time.
“Just seeing the love and just seeing the – they just play for the love of the game,” James said during the Lakers’ preseason media day on Monday. “And being around all of those kids with our AAU program, they were just out there competing and just wanting to win. It had nothing to do with social media clicks or money or fame or none of that stuff. They were just playing to be able to be able to put themselves in a position to possibly win Peach Jam.
“At that moment … I was exhausted. I was tired. Mentally, I was in too many different places,” James said. “And that’s what drew that comment. Because that’s just how I felt at the moment. But I’m happy to be returning for another season and helping this team, hopefully, get this team to the Finals.”
“It’s staggering for a player who has 20 years under the hood already and is preparing for 21 like he’s a rookie,” Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said last week. “He’s been doing 6 a.m. workouts. Probably been in our building as much as any player this offseason. “My foot has been reacting very well on my offseason workouts,” James added. Looking forward to seeing how it reacts during training camp and all preseason going into the regular season. Excited to see where I am as it stands.”“We’ll see what happens,” James said. “As far as physical toll, I don’t know, we’ll see how I feel at the end of the season.
