In a normal year, it would be Tax Day. Here's the info you need on new deadlines
With all the stress and turmoil cause by the coronavirus pandemic, here’s one less headache this week — April 15 is not the deadline to turn in your federal taxes and pay any taxes you owe.Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin pushed back the filing and payment deadline last month. It’s one of the ways government officials are trying to ensure that households and businesses have cash on hand now as they withstand the coronavirus outbreak’s economic shockwaves.
Though the federal tax filing and payment deadlines are now July 15, Mnuchin has still been urging people to file their taxes as soon as they can. That way, if they overpaid and have a refund waiting, they can have that money too. Mnuchin postponed the filing deadline a day after Senate Democrats called on the Treasury Department to change the filing deadline. The AARP also requested the federal government push back the filing deadline.
All states that have an income tax have extended the due dates, according to the American Institute of CPAs. Most of those states, 40, have pushed their deadlines back to July 15 as well, though a handful of states have different deadlines, the professional association said.
