Renfield hits a wall in its opening weekend, earning just a fraction of its sizeable budget and debuting at No. 4 behind some surprising titles.

Renfield's opening weekend at the box office has turned out to be a massive disappointment. The film, which comes from a story by The Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman, is a modernized horror-comedy-action hybrid following an iconic character from the original Bram Stoker novel Dracula. Set in the modern day, the film follows Dracula's assistant Renfield as he uses his supernatural powers to attempt to break free from the thrall of his master.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Per Variety, Renfield's opening weekend has immediately hit a wall at the domestic box office. The Nicolas Cage Dracula film, which comes with a price tag of $65 million before factoring in its massive marketing budget, will close out the weekend with a gross of only $7.7 million, putting it at either No. 4 or 5.

Does Renfield Have Potential to Become a Sleeper Hit? By most metrics, the movie should have had some draw this weekend. Although it was probably inevitable that The Super Mario Bros. Movie would have taken No. 1 again, the modernized horror-action-comedy was designed to appeal to slightly older audiences outside of the core Mario demographic.

International numbers for Renfield haven't been reported yet and may help boost its opening gross. However, if it fares similarly in non-U.S. markets, it will be a challenge for the film to scrape together enough to put it in the black while in theaters. At that point, the film's only hope would be a viewership rebound once it hits streaming, which happened for the lukewarm thrillers Fall and The Invitation in 2022, to the point that a Fall sequel is already in the works.

Renfield will most likely drop on Peacock this summer. Unfortunately, the NBCUniversal streaming service may not be the perfect home for the film, as competitors Netflix and HBO Max have better track records at breathing new life into theatrical titles. However, Peacock has still had its share of film hits, so there is always a possibility the film will at least find a devoted cult audience once it hits the Internet.
