Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) said in a statement issued Friday she was 'very, very lucky' to have avoided serious injury when she was attacked in her Washington, D.C., apartment this week.

Rep. Angie Craig said in a statement issued Friday she was"very, very lucky" to have avoided serious injury when she was attacked in her Washington, D.C., apartment this week.

The attack on Thursday occurred when a suspect, Kendrick Hamlin, 26, allegedly punched Craig in the face and grabbed her neck in the elevator of her Washington, D.C., apartment, according to a police report.“My morning coffee really saved the day yesterday, but not exactly how I expected it to," Craig's statement read."On a serious note, I will also say that I was very, very lucky that I was not more injured — and I’ll have more to say about that soon.

After being grabbed by the neck, Craig said she threw her cup of hot coffee at Hamlin before escaping the elevator. She has sustained some"bruising, but is otherwise physically okay,” Craig’s office said in a statement. “There is no evidence that the incident was politically motivated.”“I remain deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers for their quick response and subsequent arrest of a suspect last night," Craig's Friday statement read.

Hamlin allegedly fled before officials arrived at the scene of the assault and was arrested later in the day on Thursday evening. He faces one charge of simple assault.
