If the Seminoles depart from the ACC, it'll be to join a new conference.
Conference realignment has become a hot topic in Tallahassee over the last year with Florida State publicly exploring its options. Though the Seminoles are tied into the ACC's Grant of Rights until 2036, it's obvious that the Big Ten and SEC align more with the goals that the program has on the table., there is one move that is off the board as FSU tries to determine its next step.
“I don’t think it’s an option because of scheduling and everything that comes along with that, and where media contracts are now but I’m not going to lie to you and say I didn’t spend 10 minutes on it,"."I have a great staff that knows that I want to look at things and know what all my options are but also have analytics and not just throw something up there. It needs to have some support behind it so we can look at it.
Major figures within the university are not thrilled with the growing revenue gap and are searching for a solution. “Each institution in the conference has different priorities. What’s Florida State’s priority? It’s to win championships and compete nationally across the board," Alford said."How do I provide resources and make sure that we’re providing those opportunities to our student-athletes? I need resources.”
Plenty of moves and conversations are continuing to go down behind closed doors. Though they won't be searching for independence, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Seminoles bolt from the ACC before the Grant of Rights is renegotiated.
