Signing Marcus Morris to a one-year deal was a shrewd move by the New York Knicks, who add a talented power forward, but maintain their cap flexibility going forward.
BOSTON, MA - MAY 6: Giannis Antetokounmpo #34 of the Milwaukee Bucks yells out in celebration after dunking the ball over Marcus Morris #13 of the Boston Celtics during the fourth quarter of Game 4 of a second round NBA basketball playoff series atEarlier this week, the Knicks officially announced they had signed five players: Wayne Ellington, Taj Gibson, Elfrid Payton, Bobby Portis and Julius Randle. It appears they will add a sixth to the mix.
Considering what many of his peers have been earning, Morris has been grossly underpaid the last few seasons. He inked a four-year, $20 million deal back in 2014, and up to this point in his career, had never made more than $5.3 million in a single season. That will change in 2019-20."I had to make this decision based on the best situation for me and my family. This is no knock on the Spurs. I have respect for them,"From the Knicks perspective, adding Morris is a shrewd move.
Just as importantly, inking Morris to a one-year deal allows New York to stick to their plan of maintaining flexibility going forward. At the same time, he will bring toughness, intensity and professionalism to the locker room. Morris is a respected veteran that will help teach New York's young core the right way to play and approach the game.
