Opinion columnist RJRobb: The populist right - including most of Arizona's Republican congressional delegation - opposes helping Ukraine. But their reasons are a muddle.
Both referenced supposedly neglected domestic priorities – predictably, and with some justification, stressing border security. Biggs also, oddly enough, cited the the baby formula shortage. Biggs objected to some of the assistance going to prop up the Ukrainian government and complained that the Biden administration had no strategic objectives for which the aid was intended to achieve. Ukraine is different.
This European development is hugely in the strategic interests of the United States. It can be a pivotal moment in which the longer term burden on the United States for maintaining order and security on the continent begins to diminish. The United States has a significant interest in nurturing this development and being a partner and participant in it. . This was a rejection not just of the disproportionate influence of the United States in international affairs.
Some of the caviling on the populist right, exemplified by Biggs, seems calculated to avoid declaring forthrightly on the larger geopolitical stakes at issue in Ukraine.
