Researchers have devised a method where they were able to capture light and store it onto DNA, effectively creating a biological camera.

In an attempt to experiment with the idea of using biological materials to store digital data, researchers have created a method where they were able to capture light patterns — photos — and store them onto DNA., the researchers say that there is a desire to increase the integration between biological and digital interfaces, specifically the desire to store digital data. The goal of storing data within defined sequences of DNA is the most promising of these concepts.

A Encoding of light into bacteria and barcoding for preservation of spatial information. B Sequencing and decoding of stored DNA back into original image. C Initial proof of concept of BacCam using the ‘BACCAM’ pattern. Successful reconstruction of the image was done with 93/96 accuracy. Source data are provided as a Source Data file.
