Justice Stevens’s public profile was modest, but in his impact on American life, few jurists could match his legacy
Retired Justice John Paul Stevens, who served 34 years on the U.S. Supreme Court during an era of great change and co-authored some of the court’s seminal decisions, died Tuesday at the age of 99.
The high court said Justice Stevens, who retired in 2010, died in a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., hospital of complications following a stroke he suffered Monday. His death came just two months after the publication of his third book, a memoir titled “The Making of a Justice: Reflections on My First 94 Years.”
