When Ziggy Marley was performing his legendary father’s “Positive Vibration” Friday night at The Sound, the new $17 million concert venue at Del Mar Fairgrounds, he could just as well have been describing the feeling inside this welcome addition to the San Diego music scene.
Belly Up Entertainment is booking and managing The Sound, which occupies what once was the Del Mar Surfside Race Place for off-track betting. It’s owned by the 22nd District Agricultural Association.Circulating among patrons prior to the show that featured Marley and his band, Encinitas’ Ginger Roots and the Protectors, Goldsmith expressed high hopes for this 9,500-square-foot venue.

Given its size, it’s inevitable that the VUE Audiotechnik sound system is louder in some spots than in others. Away from the stage, conversations can intrude on the acoustics, but this is an issue that should be temporary as The Sound gets its sound just the way it wants it.
