Things start to change though after the family is invited to a swanky Eid get-together hosted by the social climbing Raheela . Dazzling all the young ladies in attendance is her son Salim who everyone but Ria thinks is a total catch. He's debonair, handsome and a geneticist. In other words, he's bringing all the snacks to the party.
Salim ends up taking a particular interest in Lena and they start a whirlwind romance, much to the delight of everyone, again except for Ria who's convinced there's something weird about Salim and his family -- and she's determined to get to the bottom of it before Lena says"I do." And, yes, her martial-arts skills, as well as her two best school friends , will come into play.
Kansara is captivating as Ria, playing her with just the right amount of spunk and smarts. But the performance would be wasted if not for the talents of director/writer Nida Manzoor who keeps things surprising and fun without losing control and going off the rails. Certainly, there have been films set in the British Muslim community prior to this -- for example, Riz Ahmed has starred in three memorable ones,"The Road to Guantanano,""Four Lions" and Houston director Bassam Tariq's"Mogul Mowgli" -- but those were often smaller films that played arthouses.
