The free series continues April 26 with music by Prokofiev, Haydn and Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate at Sycuan Casino
If you were looking for lively community music concerts this weekend, San Diego’s South Bay was the place to be.
All the works on the program featured a small, vibrant string orchestra made up of musicians from the San Diego symphony with a few added ringers, ably and dramatically led by Venezuelan conductor Andrés González. González is an alumnus of the Venezuelan music-education program “El Sistema,” whose notable graduates include Gustavo Dudamel and our own Rafael Payare. This smaller group was perfect for Edvard Grieg’s “Holberg Suite.
Venezuelan pianist and composer Teresa Carreño’s “Serenade for Strings” was a weak link. The two movements, “Allegro vivace” and “Tempo di marcia” are derivative character sketches that aim low and hit squarely, lumbering through a series of vaguely familiar dance textures and salon melodies. This felt like a missed opportunity, as one imagines that more interesting string works can easily be found in South American music.
