A former director of citizen's assistance for two mayors, Cantu speaks with gravitas about community policing having lost his daughter to gun violence.

If you want a rough cross section of Houstonians in a single city race, City Council At-Large No. 3 is your ticket. The candidates running to replace the term-limited conservative stalwart Michael Kubosh run the gamut, giving voters a real choice at the ballot box. There are relative newcomers like Ethan Michelle Ganz, 47, a former pipe fitter turned community organizer who was also this year’s gender nonbinary/nonconforming Pride Parade grand marshal.

What do you think about this candidate? Let us know. Cantu seemed to strike a balance, emphasizing community policing without expanding the police budget, which already tops $1 billion. “We can do more with less,” he said, especially with real community relationships supporting public safety. He also signaled his community-first approach extended to libraries, parks and other institutions that we believe are part of the public safety puzzle, too. His position on ShotSpotter was less persuasive.
