Classroom activities that help develop those skills include identifying the elements of a complete sentence, for example.“This strong foundation supports students’ learning to read in their early years — and reading to learn as they grow in their reading fluency,” Branum said. More than 25 percent of the district’s students speak a language other than English at home, Branum said. These students are served through specialized English as a Second Language services. That includes support from English learners staff members, who work with small groups of students to work on language and content mastery.
