MARTINEZ — A six-month trial centering on what police have dubbed Contra Costa’s most dangerous gang has reached its conclusion, and the only thing left is for jurors to sort through 37 felony counts that include three homicides, 16 shootings, and an assortment of burglaries and robberies.
the county’s public enemy number one in 2017, when eight members were hit with a 38-count indictment., Williams, Young, and Waters are the only defendants that remain.
The three murder counts stem from the shooting deaths of 26-year-old Melvin James, 18-year-old Otilio ‘Nico’ Martinez and 30-year-old Maxim Biswas. There are also a more than a dozen attempted murder charges, some involving rival gang members. Mahalich argued that ballistics evidence shows all of the crimes were committed with six guns, and that the killings all involved a .223 rifle.
But Williams’ attorney, Dirk Manoukian, turned that piece of evidence on its head. He argued that since the guns were linked to so many crimes, if jurors doubted defendants’ guilt in just one or two of the shootings, that should create a domino effect of doubt onto the other charges. He said authorities were relying on flimsy gang expert testimony to make up for a lack of physical evidence, and attacked the credibility of one witness who implicated Williams in two of the shootings.
