The beloved Rick and Morty episode “Pickle Rick” is actually a lot more tragic than it first appears, and represents Rick’s biggest character problem.
Arguably the most beloved episode of Rick and Morty is the classic "Pickle Rick," but the episode is actually a tragic metaphor for Rick and his personality. "Pickle Rick" was a cultural phenomenon of its own, and for a long time represented the entire Rick and Morty franchise. Sadly, the episode actually has a much deeper importance, commenting on Rick's behavior and his greatest vice.
When discussing the making of several iconic Rick and Morty episodes, Rick and Morty writer and co-creator Dan Harmon included the iconic Rick and Morty, season 3, episode 3, "Pickle Rick." The episode depicts Rick's attempts to avoid family therapy by turning himself into a pickle. This leads Rick on an adventure through the sewers where he battles a horde of violent rats.
When Rick finally concedes and attends the family's group therapy session, he is astutely analyzed by the therapist. Dr. Wong suggests Rick uses his scientific abilities to avoid the work necessary for self-improvement, which in this case is getting pickled, but the same avoidance tactic is observable in countless other Rick and Morty episodes also. This is represented in the completely extraneous adventure in the militaristic compound and the fight with a prisoner named Jaguar.
"Pickle Rick" Makes Rick's Alcoholism Even Sadder In Rick & Morty Dr. Wong observes that Rick and Beth both share an aversion to emotional vulnerability, perceiving it as a weakness. This is seen in both characters throughout Rick and Morty, but "Pickle Rick" suggests this might have long-term negative effects on Beth, and could potentially foster her own dependence on alcohol.
The alcohol metaphor confirms what everyone already knew - that Rick escapes personal problems by drinking - but the comparison is more tragic than that, as the therapist points out, "You're the master of your own universe, yet you're dripping with rat blood and feces." Rick could do anything, but rather than deal with his personal problems, he drinks and self-destructs until he is covered in blood and feces. Rick is even more reluctant to change than Jerry in Rick and Morty.
