Spotify's “Sunday Dinner” shows appreciation for the DMV.
. News of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo being bestowed this honor wasn’t surprising, but it’s easy to overlook just how influential this Virginia-repping production duo has been on hip-hop’s domination of popular music in the 2000’s and on music in general.
The documentary film series is “dedicated to bridging regional gaps and celebrating influences that define a region's sound and aesthetic with native Black artists who continue to innovate it,” according to a press statement.
Like many Sunday dinner sit-downs, the discussion was a mix of nostalgic strolls down memory lane, conversations that were celebratory in nature, and heart-to-hearts that addressed plights that presently plague the DMV music scene. For instance, the DMV area is one that is heavily influenced by music and Rico Nasty laments that the area’s educational programs don’t invest in the arts enough. “Why aren’t the high schools teaching engineers?” questions Rico.
