Rob Vanstone remembers the late Martin Fabi, who launched towering punts for the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1963 to 1965.
While preparing a tribute to the former Roughriders punter and receiver, it quickly became apparent that I should have told his story years ago.Fabi, who was born in Romania, wouldn’t have been older than two when, in 1944, his family fled to Austria after his father was killed in the Second World War.
Fabi spent a few months with the Alouettes before being claimed by the Roughriders for the waiver price of $350.On Aug. 15 of that year, the Roughriders scored only five points … and won! Shaw’s dissatisfaction was such that he saw fit to leave Lancaster at home for a Sept. 14 game against the Calgary Stampeders.
Hence the dependency on Fabi, who established enduring CFL single-game records for punts and punting yardage . Saskatchewan was scoreless until late in the third quarter, when Fabi punted for one of the 15 singles he would register during the 1963 season. Following a second consecutive touchdown-free game, the Roughriders sought to revive the offence by bringing back Frank Tripucka, who had starred for the team in the 1950s before becoming an original member of the American Football League’s Denver Broncos.
