LOS ANGELES — After more than two decades coaching in the NBA, working on Martin Luther King Jr. Day remains special to Rockets coach Stephen Silas. In many ways, it is more special than it ever was, especially this season.

Silas is one of 16 African American NBA head coaches, bringing a reminder of the league’s progress in his time in the NBA, but especially since his father, the late Paul Silas, began his career as a player in 1964 and as a coach in 1980 as an assistant and 1990 as a head coach. “It means a lot where we've come from as a league,” Silas said. “You see how many African American coaches we have in the league today. Getting the chance to coach against one of my good friends, Darvin Ham, tonight will kind of put a stamp on that process that the league has kind of gone through.

“It makes me reflect on my dad for sure and what my dad went through trying to, you know, work his way up to be an NBA coach and the sacrifices he made.”“He used to tell a story about meeting Martin Luther King and Miami one time at an airport and he got Martin Luther King to sign something for him,” Silas said. “To this day, we still don't know where it is.
