While German Marquez wasn’t sharp, Colorado beat the Cubs 6-5 anyways behind the combination of a big inning and another strong bullpen performance. After entering Friday with an MLB-best 0.68 ERA, the Rockies’ bullpen passed another test with 4 2/3 innings of work, while a five-run fourth inning propelled them to the win.
The Cubs started chipping away at Marquez in the second, and Rafael Ortega’s two-out, two-RBI single gave Chicago the initial lead. The visitors extended that advantage to 3-0 in the third with Willson Contreras’ RBI double. “That was a huge at-bat by Hilliard, and a big lift for us,” manager Bud Black said. “And Trejo, he’s looked like a major league player since last year… And this year was the same, coming out of the lockout, he’s looked physically and mentally confident.”
