Texas Longhorns men’s basketball interim head coach Rodney Terry has been named Sporting News' College Basketball Coach of the Year.
Beginning in 1964, this annual award has been presented by the sports magazine Sporting News to the best men’s college basketball head coach in the NCAA Division I competition.
Terry was named acting head coach on Dec. 12, 2022, after former Longhorns head coach Chris Beard was suspended due to a domestic violence charge. Terry was then named interim head coach for the remainder of the season on Jan. 5 when Beard was fired from the University of Texas at Austin. Terry has led the Longhorns to a 16-7 mark, defeating five AP Top 25 opponents.
In the latest AP Poll, the Longhorns are ranked No. 7. They enter this week’s Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship as a No. 2 seed with a 23-8 overall record. This marks the Longhorns’ highest seed at the league’s postseason tourney season 2011. Terry joins a long list of other renowned head coaches who have won the same honors, including John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim and Bill Self.
