Roger Craig, who made the San Francisco Giants both a more successful and fun team as its manager and led them to a World Series, has died, the team announced. He was 93.
Roger Craig, who made the San Francisco Giants both a far more successful and fun team as its manager for eight seasons, including a World Series appearance, has died, the"We have lost a legendary member of our Giants family.” said Larry Baer, the Giants' president and CEO, in a statement. “Roger was beloved by players, coaches, front office staff and fans."
With the Giants, Craig was known for his colorful, upbeat expressions such as"Humm Baby" and"Don't let your dauber down" — dauber being another word for"spirit." But his impact on baseball was far greater than that. As a major league pitcher, Craig won 74 games and appeared in three World Series. As pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers, he introduced the split-finger fastball to future Hall of Famer Jack Morris and the Tigers won the World Series in 1984.
Craig hadn't been a major league manager in six years when Giants General Manager Al Rosen talked him into taking over a team that was winding down on a 100-loss season in 1985. In Craig's first full year with the team in 1986 they improved to 83-79 with budding star Will Clark as the"Humm baby" catchphrase took hold, and in 1987 they won the National League West with a 90-72 record.
The Giants built on that success with a 92-70 season in 1989, including a trip to the World Series after beating the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS. The Giants were then swept by the Oakland A's in a series that will be most remembered for the devastating Loma Prieta earthquake just before Game 3 in San Francisco.
