The bills were part of a broader attempt to revisit The New York Times Company v. Sullivan, a landmark Supreme Court decision that made it harder for public figures to win libel cases against publishers. Dominion Voting Systems’ billion-dollar defamation suit against Fox would have tested that precedent, had it not settled at the last minute.
