'Tens of thousands' dead in Mariupol as Russia readies 'even bigger assault'

, officials said Monday — as President Volodymyr Zelensky estimated the death toll in Ukraine’s hardest-hit city was in the “tens of thousands.”

In his nightly address, Zelensky called on world leaders to impose stronger sanctions on Moscow to deter such an act. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova said more than 90% of Mariupol’s infrastructure has been wiped out.“Vladimir Putin is the main war criminal of 21st century,” Iryna Venediktova said.British officials said that Ukrainian forces had repelled several armored assaults by Russian forces in the east.

Sitting on the sea of Azov, the city is all that separates Russian-controlled areas in the east with Kremlin forces that advanced from Crimea in the south. Ukraine’s eastern city of Kharkiv came under heavy shelling on Monday, causing multiple casualties, including one child killed, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.
