DOHA - A few weeks before the world championships, silver medalist high jumper Mikhail Akimenko didn’t think he would compete, let alone step onto the podium.
It had been his first application to become an authorized neutral athlete, a term used to designate Russians vetted by the sport’s world ruling body after demonstrating that they train in a doping-free environment. “I was training in energy-saving mode, just to maintain my form,” he said. “I wasn’t training to prepare for an event.”
