Russian and Belarus players are barred from this year's Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament in response to Moscow's offensive in Ukraine
Tennis players from Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to compete at this year's Wimbledon due to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, the Grand Slam's organisers All England Lawn Tennis Club have said.
"We recognise that this is hard on the individuals affected, and it is with sadness that they will suffer for the actions of the leaders of the Russian regime," said Ian Hewitt, chairman of the All England Club on Wednesday. Russian and Belarusian players have been able to continue to compete in ATP and WTA events under a neutral flag since Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24.
It was believed this would extend to the three remaining Grand Slam events, though the ITF banned both countries' teams from the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup.
