Breaking: Prairie View A&M President Ruth Simmons is leaving the university months earlier than planned. Simmons refused to stay with 'limited presidential authority,' as Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp said policy mandates.
Simmons announced her premature departure in a letter Friday to the Prairie View A&M University community, adding that she was recently informed she could only continue with"limited presidential authority," as she had toThe Texas A&M System announced Simmons' replacement last year.
The policy, which has been in place for decades, is so that new presidents can choose their leadership teams. Simmons is a trailblazer in higher education who came out of retirement to become Prairie View's president in 2017. She announced in March 2022 that she would be stepping down from the role after a long career in administrative roles.
