Prosecutors allege that a local businessman was looking to funnel money to a Syrian extremist group that fought the government of President Bashar al-Assad from 2014 to 2019.
A local businessman accused of conspiring to fund terrorist activities in Syria is on trial this week in San Antonio federal court.
The indictment said Wadi and another suspect — Colombia-based Akmed"Daniel" Baroudi — discussed plans to find wealthy investors to bankroll an export business that would be used in the scheme. Roomberg said evidence shows the pair were looking to establish businesses that would pay for weapons such as rifles grenades, rocket launchers and remote-controlled"flying IEDs" for opposition forces.
Agents outfitted their informant with recording devices and sent him to Colombia with Wadi to attend meetings with Baroudi to learn more about their alleged plans. The informant also handed over WhatsApp conversations and information from other contacts he'd had with the two men. During negotiations in Dallas and Colombia over several months, Wadi allegedly said he had a friend in Turkey who had moved weapons into Syria and could move more into the northern part of the country, according to Roomberg.
David Lesch, an expert witness and professor of Middle Eastern history at Trinity University, testified Tuesday that the group is aligned with al-Qaida and sought to establish an Islamic state in Syria.
