Emily Zaltsman had just started eighth grade at Rawlinson Middle School when a distracted driver going 60 mph slammed into the back of the car her grandfather was driving.

"The crashes that are due to distracted driving can be prevented," Zaltsman said in a video produced by the Texas Department of Transportation."Emily didn’t die in an accident. Emily died in a crash that could have been prevented. Emily was killed because of another person’s selfish and thoughtless actions."Since 2017, more than 2,000 people have died in Texas by distracted drivers, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. And such deaths are on the rise.
Emily Zaltsman was killed by a distracted driver in 2017. Her mother is at the center of a new campaign that aims to raise awareness about such deaths.from a volleyball game with her grandfather, when a 2011 Jeep Wrangler slammed into the back of the 2005 Lexus her grandfather was driving. Emily, who was a backseat passenger, was crushed by the impact.
"My father was at a complete stop right before the interchange at 1604 before the I-10 interchange and a driver, a male driver, 22 years old, didn’t even stop," Zaltsman said."He was traveling 60 miles per hour and he never even braked because he didn’t look up from his phone to know that the traffic ahead had stopped."Emily and her grandfather were transported to University Hospital, where Emily later died. Emily was an honor roll student who dreamed of becoming a doctor.
