North Texas authorities are cracking down on drunken driving in hopes of deterring partygoers from getting behind the wheel on New Year’s Eve.

“It’s always nice to celebrate the holidays with friends and family, but please keep the well-being of other travelers at the forefront of your mind as you head out,” Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw said in a statement about the agency’s initiative. From Dec. 1, 2020 to Jan. 1, there were more than 2,400 alcohol-related crashes statewide, causing more than 90 deaths and 200 serious injuries. In 2020, 5% of crashes — and 25% of traffic fatalities — in the state were alcohol-related, the Texas Department of Transportation reported.

Statewide, DPS said 615 citations were issued to drivers during last year’s holiday season for driving while intoxicated.
