Simón Vega's latest show at Dallas’ Liliana Bloch Gallery explores cultural tourism and capitalism.

The Salvadoran artist hadn’t been to the international fair, which serves as a honeypot for the art world elite, since before the pandemic.
But the last time Vega’s work was seen in Texas, Bloch dedicated her entire booth to him at the 2021 Dallas Art Fair. It was the scaled-down, rescheduled version of that year’s fair, but the booth was one of its more memorable. The booth’s dominant feature was a futuristic figure wearing something between traditional shamanic garb and a hazmat suit.
The ideas driving the work may be serious, but like his other exhibits, Vega avoids being didactic, using Shakespeare’sas a narrative entry point. In the play, the wizard Prospero arrives on an island, bringing bona fide magic. Vega connects that magic to the trappings of digital culture, which has led to, among other things, El Salvador adopting Bitcoin as national currency, despite many of its citizens not owning smartphones.
