Samuel L. Jackson shares images of him getting made up as NickFury - but he's said SecretInvasion & TheMarvels reshoots aren't until later this year 👀 What could this mystery MCU project be 🤔
Samuel L. Jackson teases his return as Nick Fury for a mystery Marvel Cinematic Universe project. From the moment Nick Fury appeared in Iron Man's post-credits scene, Jackson's character has played an integral role in the shared universe. He appeared in five of the six Phase 1 MCU movies in some capacity, but his presence has dwindled a bit since then, especially after the fall of SHIELD. After four appearances in Phase 3, though, Nick Fury is set to have a major role in Phase 4.
There are currently confirmed plans for Fury to appear in three MCU Phase 4 projects. Jackson will first return in Secret Invasion, the upcoming Disney+ show he co-leads with Ben Mendelsohn's Talos. It is the closest thing Marvel Studios has to a solo-Nick Fury project in the works and continues his Skrull-related storyline from Spider-Man: Far From Home. He will then return in The Marvels, which is expected to heavily connect to Secret Invasion.
Thanks to the mystery of Jackson's Nick Fury return tease, it appears he might be working on his fourth Phase 4 project. Marvel Studios is not currently filming any movies, although Mahershala Ali's Blade is expected to begin soon. This could mean that Fury's return is happening in another Disney+ show. It is confirmed that Echo is in the middle of production, but Ironheart and Loki season 2 also began filming this week.
Regardless of which specific project Fury appears in, it is quite clear that Jackson's character is once again going to be the connective tissue for the MCU, like Wong's many Phase 4 cameos. It makes sense to have him serve in this capacity as Phase 4 continues to unfold and the shared universe moves further away from the original Avengers. Perhaps all of his appearances are going to lead to the formation of the MCU's next Avengers team and the eventual announcement of Avengers 5.
