Fewer students in the same number of schools hurts education quality, but deciding how to consolidate will require community input, officials say.
Christina Martinez, the SAISD board president, and superintendent Jaime Aquino said the district's"rightsizing" process will be completely transparent to the community.San Antonio Independent School District officials next week will ask its board to embark on a three-month assessment they say will lead to the closing of schools by the fall of 2024 amid faster-than-anticipated enrollment declines.
While the changes will have a financial benefit to the district as an “added bonus,” the key motivation is to better the quality of education currently being hurt by too few students spread across too many schools, Aquino said. Public meetings will be held this summer to gather feedback on the framework before the staff presents an initial recommendation to the board on Sept. 18.
In some cases, a pair of schools might be consolidated onto a single campus, but with both retaining their school names and community identity, to preserve family and local traditions.Aquino said the possible uses could include community programs or even housing for teachers who find it hard to afford to live in the rapidly-gentrifying school district — but the one thing the district should avoid, he said, is to leave a closed school standing vacant.
